A new rumor suggests Warner Bros. is eyeing a Handmaid’s Tale director to tackle its Supergirl movie.
A Supergirl film was first announced back in August when it was revealed that 22 Jump Street writer Oren Uziel had been brought on board to pen the screenplay. And while it was expected, it was later confirmed that the studio would be hiring a female director to helm the feature. Now, despite being in the early stages of development, it appears Warner Bros. is beginning to look at potential directors for the gig. One name that is said to top its list, according to Omega Underground, is none other than director Reed Morano.

Morano first established herself as a cinematographer, having shot films such as Frozen River and Kill Your Darlings before making the jump to director with the 2015 Olivia Wilde-led Meadowland. That film quickly put her on many “directors to watch” lists, and shortly thereafter, Morano found herself topping the list of directors that should tackle a Captain Marvel film – which resulted in the director responding by showing interest in doing just that. Of course, that gig ended up going to Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, but Morano’s film slate has continually managed to grow with the likes of films such as I Think We’re Alone Now and the forthcoming action-flick The Rhythm Section. She also helmed the first three episodes of Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale for which she won an Emmy.
While Omega Underground indicates Morano is the top choice on the studio’s wish list for Supergirl, the site does reaffirm that an official offer has not been made, nor can it confirm whether a meeting has taken place between the two parties. It should be noted that, Morano just recently wrapped production on The Rhythm Section and is currently in post-production, with Keeper of the Diary seemingly next on her slate. So, should an offer be made, it’ll more than likely come down to whether the two parties can work out scheduling.

As of this writing, a release date for Supergirl has not been announced. However, fans can get their Kara Danvers fix when the CW’s take on the Girl of Steel starring Melissa Benoist returns for its fourth season later this year.
