Vertigo’s Death and Dream Dominate in Stunning Jim Lee Artwork

The latest Twitch stream by DC Co-Publisher and Chief Creative Officer Jim Lee had a strong focus on the company’s Vertigo imprint.

As part of the artist’s semi-regular Twitch streams where Lee sketches a different character live for viewers, the superstar artist provided a breathtaking piece of original artwork showcasing Daniel Dream and Death from the pages of Vertigo’s The Sandman.

First created in the pages of January 1989’s The Sandman #1 by writer Neil Gaiman and artists Sam Kieth and Mike Dringenberg, the two characters are members of the mythical Endless and personifications of the concepts for which they are named.

The dark fantasy series helped launch DC Comics’ mature imprint Vertigo Comics with a 75-issue run that ended in 1996 launching a whole host of spinoffs both during and after the series’ original publication. This month, the publisher launched The Sandman Universe, a line of four new ongoing comic book series with creative teams personally selected and overseen by Gaiman himself.

While helping run DC Comics as Co-Publisher and Chief Creative Officer, Lee keeps his artistic skills sharp by providing variant covers and hosting Twitch streams for the fans. Before drawing the iconic Vertigo characters, the previous Twitch stream had Lee sketching a gorgeous take on Japanese filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki’s Princess Mononoke.
