Michael Caine Explains the Ending of Christopher Nolan’s Inception


Inception star Michael Caine is finally clearing up the confusion about the cliffhanger ending of Christopher Nolan’s 2010 sci-fi thriller.

Starring the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Marion Cotillard, Tom Hardy and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, with Caine as Professor Stephen Miles, the  film left audiences questioning whether the final scene was reality or simply another dream sequence.

Speaking at Film 4’s Summer Screen, Caine confirmed that Inception keeps a happy ending and that DiCaprio’s Dom Cobb was reunited with his children in real life. “When I got the script of Inception, I was a bit puzzled by it and I said to [Nolan], ‘I don’t understand where the dream is’,” Caine admitted. “I said, ‘When is it the dream and when is it reality?’ He said, ‘Well, when you’re in the scene it’s reality.’ So get that — if I’m in it, it’s reality. If I’m not in it, it’s a dream.”

With Cobb making it back to the United States without being arrested for murder, Inception‘s happily ever after had many questioning whether Nolan was toying with viewers. Audiences can now go back into the twisted world of Inception and know that any scenes featuring Caine are set in reality.

In keeping with Nolan’s head-scratching movies like Memento and The PrestigeInception was a cryptic outing. While Caine is keen to close the case file on Inception‘s ending, Nolan himself has said always said the final scene is supposed to be ambiguous.

The ending of Inception has become one of the great mysteries of modern cinema, with fans and critics alike arguing whether it was just a dream since its 2010 premiere. Eight years later, everyone now has the answer.
