Speaking at Film 4’s Summer Screen, Caine confirmed that Inception keeps a happy ending and that DiCaprio’s Dom Cobb was reunited with his children in real life. “When I got the script of Inception, I was a bit puzzled by it and I said to [Nolan], ‘I don’t understand where the dream is’,” Caine admitted. “I said, ‘When is it the dream and when is it reality?’ He said, ‘Well, when you’re in the scene it’s reality.’ So get that — if I’m in it, it’s reality. If I’m not in it, it’s a dream.”
With Cobb making it back to the United States without being arrested for murder, Inception‘s happily ever after had many questioning whether Nolan was toying with viewers. Audiences can now go back into the twisted world of Inception and know that any scenes featuring Caine are set in reality.
