Tom Hardy’s Venom won’t “necessarily” be the character that links together the films in Sony’s fledgling Spider-Verse.
Although a new profile suggested the actor may appear in such planned Spider-Man spinoffs as Silver & Black, Morbius the Living Vampire and Kraven the Hunter, the studio has cautioned that Eddie Brock may not be at the center of the cinematic universe.
Asked specifically whether Venom will serve as the Spider-Verse’s connective tissue, a Sony spokesperson told Syfy Wire, “Not necessarily,” adding, “[Venom] is a standalone film but there will be key points of intersection that connect it with other films.”

While it seems like a logical step to swap out Spider-Man for Venom in a more mature world away from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it also relies on shoehorning Eddie Brock into all of those movies. For features like Morbius and Kraven, it might not make sense to include Venom simply for the sake of doing so. Just because Robert Downey Jr. kick-started the MCU with Iron Man, it doesn’t mean he has to appear in every movie.
Sony clearly has a vision for where it wants to take the Spider-Verse, and given that Woody Harrelson has already teased a Venom sequel, Hardy is already expected to return to the franchise. Just don’t expect Eddie Brock to lead a Venomverse for Sony.
Swinging into theaters on Oct. 5, director Ruben Fleischer’s Venom stars Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock/Venom, Michelle Williams as Anne Weying, and Riz Ahmed as Carlton Drake/Riot.
