Star Trek: Worf Spinoff Still a Possibility, Dorn Says

Star Trek director and Worf actor Michael Dorn says a spinoff starring his fan-favorite Klingon is still quite possible, suggesting there’s still “hope” for an old idea he pitched to CBS.

In a new interview Dorn was asked about his unmade project: Star Trek: The Next Generation – The Worf Chronicles, which would follow a now-Captain Worf as he commands his own Starship alongside his girlfriend. The idea of course never got picked up, but Dorn has been quite vocal about the project over the years, famously discussing its origins (and possible future) on an episode of the popular Star Trek podcast “Transporter Room 3,” hosted by veteran Internet writers Scott Collura and Phil Pirrello.

Dorn still loves the idea. “I think this Worf thing would be perfect — I mean, really perfect,” he told The News & Observer. “It’s just a matter of getting the phone number of the right guy or getting the email of the right person that can actually get you in there. It’s a little early in the game right now, but I still think there’s hope for it.”

“I’ve always liked the Klingons,” Dorn added. “I’ve always thought that they were the most interesting aliens outside of the Vulcans and all that. There’s a certain Shakespearian bent with the Klingons. They’re very nationalistic — there’s coups, there’s assassinations, there’s takeovers, there’s all these kind of things. Interestingly enough, they talk kind of Shakespearean.”

Dorn’s Lt. Worf made his debut in 1987 on the hit television series Star Trek: The Next Generation. In addition to appearing in four feature films alongside the TNG cast (and cameoing as Worf’s ancestor in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country), Dorn’s beloved character boarded Star Trek: Deep Space Nine in the series’ fourth season, staying on as a main cast member until the show’s end.

Premiering in 2017, the currently-running Star Trek: Discovery stars Sonequa Martin-Green, Michelle Yeoh and Jason Isaacs. Though it was repeatedly delayed over the course of its production, it earned praise for being a grittier Star Trek show set in the Prime Timeline. Discovery is now heading for a second season and promises to tie closer to Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek: The Original Series, and it sounds like there is plenty more to come from the reignited Star Trek fandom. Could that future involve the likes of Michael Dorn? Time will tell…
