The Waverider has landed in San Diego. In anticipation of Season 4, Legends of Tomorrow stars Caity Lotz, Matt Ryan, Brandon Routh, Maisie Richardon-Sellers, Nick Zano, Dominic Purcell, Tala Ashe, Jes Macallan Courtney Ford and executive producers Phil Klemmer and Keno Shimizu arrived at Comic-Con International to discuss the upcoming season.
Klemmer pointed out only three of the characters introduced in the first season remain on the show. “If you normally show, you get tired of people’s voices because they only go in one direction… These people have never been in a scene together. It’s exciting! We’re bringing on Romona Young,” Klemmer announced.
“She’s going to start out as a sort of a person who works at brings Postmates and brings sandwiches to Gary,” he added.
Shimizu added that the series will introduce Nate’s father, who has “a contentious relationship” with his son. Tom Wilson will play the character.
“Now I’m back, four years later! It’s awesome!” Ryan shared, recounting his journey to Legends. “What’s great is everything that I’ve studied about this character is from the comics… what we’ve got here is a bunch of characters Constantine has never interacted with before,” he added. “I think Mick is someone he’d butt heads with quite a lot, but he provides a flame for Constantine’s terrible habits.”
Lotz teased that she had done some wire stunts for the second episode of the series.
“Nora, I really feel for her. She’s been through a lot,” Ford shared. “She’s not with Mallus. She’s not with her father. She has to figure out who she is without these influences. Is she going to go down this dark path, or get a job at Starbucks? Will she become a complicated ally?”
“It’s possible that it already has set sail. I think it’s up to both characters to figure out kind of what it becomes. They’ve had some crazy experience already together,” Routh said of his character’s relationship with Nora Darhk.
Asked about the show’s infamous blue mascot Beebo, Shimizu said, “When we first came up with the idea, it was really kind of a joke… I think as we went on into the writing and the production of the character… we realized we’d come on to something special.”
At that, someone in a Beebo suit entered the stage and gave several cast members a hug, only to get a few punches from . When he took a seat at the table, he removed the head and revealed Gary actor Adam Tsekhman underneath.
“She’s a rebel without a cause. She’s on her mission,” said Richardson-Sellers, who will play a British character named Charlie in Season 4. “She goes on a journey of self-discovery. She’s been locked up as long as she can remember.”
“We’re going to see these really strong women try to domesticate and be softer and we’re going to see a softer side of Ms. Lance and a softer side of Ms. Sharpe as well,” Macallan teased.
“The first episode is going to be really excited… I can’t image where we’re going. We’re at Woodstock and we might cross paths with the Beatles also in the 60s,” Ashe revealed.
“Nate started off as a real-life person who became a superhero so it’s nice we get to go back to the history and the origins of that. Tom is phenomenal and it’s great to play around with him as Nate’s dad… and I get to find out really cool, behind-the-scenes Back to the Future stuff.”
“Thank you everyone for liking Gary! He will continue to listen to his boss… and follow through with perfection, like he always does,” Tsekhman joked.
Asked if Captain Cold or Firestorm could return, Klemmer said, “I wish we had good news to announce on that front, but at the moment, we don’t. We certainly keep that in our back pocket. There’s a lot of seasons to come.”
“Personally, as an actor, I take the issue of representation very seriously,” Ashe shared. “I am with the writers and the showrunners who worked really hard to — yes, she’s the first Muslim-American superhero on television, which is dope… It’s a part of her identity… and I think it’s really important to all of us… We’re going to see some of her backstory. She’s experienced prejudice… she kind of has hindsight in a way, and she’s trying to pass that on to the other Legends and also apply to what’s going on.”
As to the way the Season 3 finale impacted the timeline, Shimizu said, “In a way, it already has, just in terms of where we saw Kuasa Jiwe in the finale. She and her sister share the totem and protect Detroit together. The larger Arrowverse in the animated series has been impacted, which is nice to see.”
