Agent Liberty Creator Dan Jurgens Not a Fan of Supergirl Description

News that DC Comics’ Agent Liberty will be coming to Season 4 of The CW’s Supergirl hasn’t been met with approval by the character’s creator, Dan Jurgens.

According to the character breakdown, this version of Agent Liberty (to be played by Smallville alum, Sam Witwer) will be an antagonist, someone who’s “the ruthless and terrifying founder and figurehead of Children of Liberty, a hate group that supports a human-first world order.” However, Jurgens took issue with this extremist depiction of the character he debuted in 1991’s Superman #60.

The writer tweeted: “Agent Liberty was not, and is not, a whack job. But, as a TV writer, if that’s all you’ve got, well… congratulations on your discovery of one dimensional writing.”

It’s believed Agent Liberty will be used as part of the alien refugee conflict the show has cultivated, perhaps taking on a role stemming from a perspective of oppression and xenophobia. However, Jurgen’s issue may be coming from how he’s grown over the years, portrayed in the comics as an ex-CIA operative who became disenchanted with the government for political reasons. Despite being a dangerous adversary to Superman and the Justice League, he’d eventually help them on a few occasions, acting more like an anti-hero than a straight-up villain.

Given how his beliefs and overall philosophies come from a good place, Agent Liberty could still follow the source material and have a change of heart during his TV arc, especially if America is to be threatened by an evil Russian version of Supergirl.
