A remake of ’80s horror movie classic Child’s Play is on the way from It producers David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, MGM is fast-tracking the project, with production slated to start in Vancouver this September. Lars Klevberg — the Norwegian filmmaker behind the upcoming Polaroid — will direct, working off a script by video game writer and Kung Fury 2 scribe Tyler Burton Smith.

Directed by Tom Holland (the Fright Night and The Langoliers guy, not Marvel’s Peter Parker) and co-created by Don Mancini, 1988’s Child’s Play was the first in a long-running series of slasher films following the murderous exploits of Chucky, a toy doll possessed by the spirit of a serial killer. Starring Alex Vincent, Catherine Hicks and Chris Sarandon, the original movie was a modest success at the box office and went on to become a cult favorite, spawning several sequels.
Child’s Play 2 and Child’s Play 3 were released in 1990 and 1991, respectively, before the series was revamped with a much stronger horror-comedy bent for 1998’s Bride of Chucky. That was followed by 2004’s Seed of Chucky, 2013’s Curse of Chucky and last year’s Cult of Chucky.
Plot details on the current Child’s Play are thin, but the upcoming movie appears to be a remake and not a continuation of the series.
