Incredibles 2 Scores Biggest Domestic Debut for Animated Flick, Ever

Pixar’s Incredibles 2 is off to a rather incredible start, continuing Disney’s box office dominance.

The sequel to 2004’s The Incredibles opened to a stunning $180 million from 4,410 theaters within the United States and Canada. As if that wasn’t impressive enough, however, that now gives the film the biggest domestic debut ever for an animated movie — not adjusted for inflation — overtaking previous record holder, Finding Dory, a fellow Pixar film, which opened to $135.1 million two years ago.

Along with scoring the biggest domestic opening ever for an animated film, Incredibles 2 also earned the eighth-best domestic opening all time for any film animated or otherwise, not adjusted for inflation. It also gives Disney the three biggest openings of the year so far with Avengers: Infinity War ($257.7 million), Black Panther ($202 million), and Incredibles 2.

Internationally, the film took in an estimates $51.5 million, bringing its worldwide total as of now to $231.5 million at the worldwide box office. Not bad for a sequel that came fourteen years after its predecessor! It remains to be seen whether or not Pixar and director Brad Bird will take another fourteen years to bring us Incredibles 3, but judging by the film’s opening weekend estimates, a third installment seems all but likely at this point.
