Daredevil Charlie Cox Praises Ben Affleck

The 2003 Daredevil film starring Ben Affleck was a bomb — both critically and financially — earning just $179 million at the worldwide box office. In fact, Affleck has been incredibly vocal regarding his disappointments over the film in recent years, saying it wasn’t executed as well as he’d hoped. Yet, there’s one person that has continually praised the actor’s take on the character — Daredevil star Charlie Cox.

While at the Comicpalooza convention in Texas this weekend, Cox was once again asked what his thoughts were on the film, and more importantly Affleck’s portrayal of the Man Without Fear. For Cox, while he doesn’t necessarily care for the film as a whole, there was one aspect he thought was excellent and that was Affleck’s take on Matt Murdock. “I happen to think Ben Affleck’s performance as Daredevil is fantastic. I really like his Matt Murdock… I stole a lot of stuff.”

Of course, just because the actor is fond of Affleck’s take on Murdock, it doesn’t necessarily mean he agrees with the tone of the overall film. One of the things that made Daredevil stand out when the television series premiered in 2015 was it’s much darker take on the character, one that felt more in line with the comics. For Cox, that’s one of the biggest differences between the two, that the television series accurately manages to capture the sinister feel of the comics, something the film failed to do.

“I don’t like the film,” he explained. “The original Daredevil film I don’t think that worked particularly well and the reason I don’t think it worked particularly well is that what we discovered with the show is that the tone of the character suits a slightly darker, more sinister feel. In my opinion the best Daredevil comics are the ones that are geared towards a slightly more mature audience and I think that what the show captures is that level of sinister, dark tone, I guess. But I like Ben Affleck’s Matt Murdock.”

Details on the show’s forthcoming third season remain sparse, however, should the rumors of Bullseye’s inclusion prove to be true, the latest season should make for a much more sinister take than we’ve seen in the previous two seasons.

While there is still no official release date set for Daredevil Season 3, it is expected to return to Netflix sometime in 2018 with new showrunner Erik Oleson at the helm.
