Cartoon Network Releases ThunderCats Roar BTS Video

A new ThunderCats animated series is heading to Cartoon Network in 2019. A new behind-the-scenes video for ThunderCats Roar discusses the origin of the series, along with the debut of the show’s new intro.

The video begins with ThunderCats’ animated leader, Lion-O, introducing the series, while helping to answer the question of what exactly a ThunderCat is.

Producer Victor Courtright shares his history of growing up watching the original ThunderCats with his older brothers, and how the series lends itself to comedy. However, if you’re getting worried that the show will be a non-stop laugh track, action elements will still be a focus for ThunderCats Roar.

Storyboards, early concept art and a new intro are also displayed, with Courtright calling the original series opening “animation history gold.” The producer would go on to say, “If you’re going to do a new ThunderCats, you better make the intro good.”

Airing from 1985 to 1989, ThunderCats is set on Third Earth, where a race of catlike aliens are forced to take refuge while escaping the evil Mutants of Plun-Darr. Upon arriving on Third Earth, the Thunderan Prince Lion-O leads the remaining ThunderCats to fight the incoming Mutants and the planet’s Mumm-Ra, who desires the legendary Sword of Omens to continue his evil rule. ThunderCats inspired toys and merchandise, comic books and a 2011 television reboot, which also aired on Cartoon Network.

ThunderCats Roar debuts on Cartoon Network in 2019.
