Riz Ahmed Wants to Write Ms. Marvel Screenplay

Emmy-award winning actor, rapper and activist Riz Ahmed has thrown his name into the ring to write Marvel Studio’s Ms. Marvel movie.

Ahmed’s request isn’t a lonesome one. He tweeted that he wants to bring fellow actors and writers of color Mindy Kaling and Kumail Nanjiani with him to the writers’ table. Given their respective backgrounds — Ahmed is British-Pakistani, Kaling has Indian heritage and Nanjiani is Pakistani-American — it’s clear Ahmed believes a diverse creative team would suit Kamala’s tale as a young Pakistani-American Muslim superhero on the fringes of society.

This comes on the heels of Marvel Studios president Kevin Fiege indicating that the character is indeed destined to appear on the big screen, but only after Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel solo film. “Captain Marvel’s shooting right now with Brie Larson,” Feige said in an earlier interview. “Ms. Marvel, which is another character in the comic books, the Muslim hero who is inspired by Captain Marvel, is definitely sort of in the works. We have plans for that once we introduce Captain Marvel.”

Of course, Ahmed is no stranger to the comic book movie world, as he’ll be playing Carlton Drake, the villainous head of the Life Foundation, in the upcoming Venom flick. He also has Disney cred under his belt, having starred in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story as Bodhi Rook, a key member of the Rebel Alliance.

Ms. Marvel can next be seen in Marvel Rising, a new animated feature from Marvel Television. Although an official release date is yet to be announced, it’s expected to debut later this year.
