Warner Bros. Targeting 2020 Release for Man of Steel 2

Ever since Man of Steel zoomed into theaters back in 2013, Superman fans have been eagerly awaiting news regarding a sequel. Unfortunately, while Warner Bros. has yet to formally announce Man of Steel 2, the film is said to be a part of its planned DC slate with rumors suggesting it may be coming sooner than we think.

According to Revenge of the Fans Editor-in-Chief Mario-Francisco Robles, Warner Bros. is eyeing a 2020 release for Man of Steel 2 — despite having no director or script. Robles revealed the news on the latest episode of El Fanboy Podcast, suggesting that the studio is (finally) moving full steam ahead with a proper sequel to the divisive film.

Of course, this news should be treated as a rumor for the time being as this isn’t coming from an official outlet and the person behind the news has made sure to stress the rumor aspect. However, with Matthew Vaughn reportedly having been in talks at one point to helm Man of Steel 2, it would seem to lend a bit of truth to the report. Henry Cavill, who is coming off of his most recent turn as Superman in last year’s Justice League, has been teasing a return to the cape for a bit now, and with no Justice League announced as of now, the only two logical options would be Black Adam and another Superman solo film. Still, that doesn’t necessarily mean the film will definitely secure a 2020 release.

As fans will note, Warner Bros. has had multiple DC projects in various states of development over the past few years. While movement has been slow on many of them, it’s always possible Warner Bros. will opt to fast-track another project — or two — much like it did with Suicide Squad, essentially claiming the four open 2020 release dates. It’s even harder to know what the studio has planned following the dismal performance of Justice League at the box office, with executives reportedly heading back to the drawing board to decide on where to go from there. For now, though, there appears to be movement on a new Superman film, and for that, DC fans should be excited.

As it stands, only James Wan’s Aquaman, David Sandberg’s Shazam! and Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 2 are officially slated for release, and if the rumors are to be believed, Cavill and Zachary Levi’s blossoming bromance on social media could hint at a possible crossover with Superman and Shazam. As for Man of Steel 2, the last update was that the film was in development, however, the studio seems to be focusing on developing the female team-up film Birds of Prey next along with The Flash, leaving the Superman flick’s status unknown.
