Discovery Season 2 Officially Begins Production

The Peabody-nominated Star Trek: Discovery series has signaled the official start of production on its second season with the release of a behind-the-scenes video.

Developed for CBS’s subscription-based streaming service, CBS All Access, Discovery takes place a decade before the events of the original Star Trek series, with its first season set against the backdrop of the war against the United Federation of Planets and the Klingon Empire.

Renewed for a second season in October, the series recently cast Anson Mount, last seen as Black Bolt on Marvel’s Inhumans, as Christopher Pike. The character is an important figure in the Star Trek mythos, having served as the captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise before James T. Kirk. Additionally, fan-favorite character Spock has been announced to appear the sophomore season, in an episode directed by Next Generation alum Jonathan Frakes.

Production on the 13-episode second season of Discovery is projected to last through November, with a premiere expected in 2019.

Streaming now on CBS All Access, the first season of Star Trek: Discovery stars Sonequa Martin-Green, Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, Shazad Latif, Mary Wiseman, Wilson Cruz, Mary Chieffo, Jason Isaacs.
