Discovery Season 2 Episode 2

It’s now been confirmed that Spock will appear in the second season of Star Trek: Discovery. However, at this point it’s unclear if we’ll see a “The Cage”-era Spock aboard the Enterprise, which was teased in the Discovery Season 1 finale, or just a younger version of the iconic character in a flashback.

We do know for sure we’ll at least see a young Spock in a flashback sequence, alongside a younger version of Sonequa Martin-Green’s Michael Burnham, in the second episode of Season 2, directed by none other than veteran Star Trek actor and helmer Jonathan Frakes (Star Trek: First Contact).

Frakes himself confirmed the filming of this flashback sequence as a guest at El Paso Comic Con 2018. Justin Oser, the host of the Star Trek: The Next Generation show Earl Grey on Trek FM, reported Frakes’ comments in a tweet, which indicated the flashback scene would take place in “Despite Yourself.” The episode, as the tweet notes, will also include Anson Mount’s Captain Christopher Pike.

In traditional Star Trek continuity, Spock served aboard the Enterprise as science officer prior to the tenure of Captain James T. Kirk, under his predecessor, Captain Pike. If Discovery were to adhere to this continuity, Spock should be aboard Pike’s Enterprise we caught a glimpse of in the Discovery Season 1 finale. We’ve yet to get any confirmation that this young(er) Spock will appear.

The Pike/Spock-era of Star Trek was famously captured in the early, pre-William Shatner pilot of the franchise, “The Cage.”

Additionally, at the convention, Frakes reportedly noted that in addition to “Despite Yourself” he would direct Episode 10 of Star Trek: Discovery’s second season.

On the film front, we’re likely to see Zachary Quinto reprise his take on the iconic Vulcan in a Star Trek 4 — quite possibly directed by Quentin Tarantino — which is reportedly not the only Star Trek movie in the works.
