Michael K. Williams Reveals Details About His Solo Character

Actor Michael K. Williams, who was replaced in Solo: A Star Wars Story by Paul Bettany amid the turmoil that plagued production, has revealed some key details about his version of the character Dryden Vos.

Williams made an appearance on the Jim and Sam show on Sirius XM, where he described his character as “half mountain lion, half human” and delved into the dynamic between Vos, Alden Ehrenreich’s Han Solo and Emilia Clarke’s Qi’Ra. “He was extremely sophisticated,” Williams said of his character. “Very rich. He’d been around the world, older guy, and it was sort of a love triangle between Emilia Clarke’s character, Qi’Ra and the young Han Solo.”

“Not where it was overtly a love triangle but there was definitely a pissing contest going on for the girl’s attention,” the actor continued. “And [Vos] is old and [Han] is younger so it was that thing also going on, like ‘Young buck, I’ve been around the world.’ But he’s like ‘The young chick wants the young buck.’ So there was a little bit of that energy going on. But the relationship on paper was definitely with Qi’Ra and Han Solo.”

It is unclear if these characteristics will remain now that Bettany plays the role.

Williams also commented on the turmoil the film underwent in production, explaining that the film was about 80% complete when Phil Lord and Chris Miller were fired. He then revealed that when Ron Howard took over, his entire role in the film would have been reshot. “I’ve seen a lot of crazy shit, but that was one for the textbooks,” Williams said.

Directed by Ron Howard from a script by Lawrence and Jon Kasdan, Solo: A Star Wars Story stars Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, Emilia Clarke as Qi’ra and Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca. They’re joined by Thandie Newton as Val, Phoebe Waller-Bridge L3-37, Paul Bettany as Dryden Vos and Woody Harrelson as Tobias Beckett. The film hits theaters on May 25.
