It might be a little hard to believe, but legendary manga magazine Weekly Shonen Jump will be celebrating its 50th anniversary in Aug. 2018! The very first issue was published back in 1968 and since then it’s serialized countless favorites like Dragon Ball, Saint Seiya, Hunter x Hunter and more. Out of all of these phenomenal titles, though, which has the strongest protagonist?
To find out, goo Ranking turned to its visitors to see exactly what their take on the question was, and here are the results!
10. Uzumaki Naruto, Naruto
9. Kujo Jotaro, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders
8. Ryotsu Kankichi, KochiKame
7. Norimaki Arale, Dr. Slump
6. Kusuo Saiki, The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.
5. Korosensei, Assassination Classroom
4. Luffy, One Piece
So far the rankings seem to favor older manga, with only Saiki and Korosensei hailing from titles that began after 2010! Will this trend prove the same for the top 3?
3. Sakata Gintoki, Gintama
This white-haired samurai from Sorachi Hideaki’s Gintama beat out Luffy by over a hundred points! Despite his utter laziness and beginnings as a scavenger orphan, the count of those that were defeated or killed by him is so high that he’s known as “White Demon.” With his immense strength, speed, sword and hand-to-hand skills, and other important skills, it also seems like he can do it all, which is exactly why he comes in third!
2. Giorno Giovanna, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Part 5
Some hundred points above Gin-chan comes Giorno from Araki Hirohiko’s JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure! His Stand, Gold Experience, can accomplish quite a number of feats: creating life, unleashing deadly punches and even trapping defeated enemies in an endless loop of death… With powers on both ends of the spectrum of life and death, it’s no wonder that fans voted him into second place.
Everyone’s favorite Saiyan (sorry, Vegeta!) from Toriyama Akira’s global classic Dragon Ball stole the top spot with over two hundred more votes than the previous slot! Goku has spent his whole life training to be stronger than anyone else, a dedication that has paid off time and time again. He surpassed the legendary form Super Saiyan God, only to refine it to a more powerful form called Super Saiyan Blue! Strong enough to even head face-to-face with the God of Destruction Beerus, Goku is one of the strongest warriors to protect both his (and our!) universe.
Considering the immense popularity of Goku, it’s not surprising that he came in first… but what about all the others? Do you agree with these power rankings, or is there a more worthy champion who should be recognized for their strength?
