That sound you hear is the collective fandom of two massively popular franchises screaming in unfathomable excitement. On Sunday, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn and Star Wars icon Mark Hamill had an exchange on Twitter that could turn out to be the start of a collaboration between the two for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
It all began when a fan tweeted at Gunn, asking him to find a role for Hamill in the third installment of the blockbuster franchise. The filmmaker appeared receptive to the notion, replying, “I think [Mark Hamill] lives around the corner from me in Malibu, so he can just come over and we can talk about it over a cup of coffee.”

Hamill joined in on the fun, responding that he “would be happy to do so.” While it all seemed like good fun up until then, with Gunn writing back, “Haha let’s do it,” things took a turn for the tantalizingly serious when Hamill answered “DM me for my contact info if you’re serious.”

Then, Star Wars and Guardians of the Galaxy fans were thrown for a loop when Gunn and Hamill worked out the logistics of how to send each other direct messages on Twitter. And that was the end of their public conversation.

Hamill appearing in some capacity in Guardians Vol. 3 would be a dream come true for many fans, especially after the actor made his long-awaited return as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is expected to arrive in theaters in 2020. Next up for the Guardians is Avengers: Infinity War, which opens May 8.
