Punisher S2 Character Breakdowns Point to Ennis Adaptation

Two new character breakdowns for the second season of Netflix’s The Punisher indicate that the streaming service and Marvel Television may be looking to adapt Garth Ennis’ 2005-06 “The Slavers” arc.

According to That Hashtag Show, Netflix is looking to cast two female roles: Annie Beir, a scrappy, street-smart 16-year-old; and Kim Davis, a therapist in her mid-30s. That Hashtag Show makes the logical connection that Beir would be analogous to Viorica, who — in the comics — is saved by Frank Castle and whose story helps him discover Vera Konstantin and Cristu Bulat’s sex slave ring. Davis would serve a similar function to Jen Cooke, a social worker working with Viorica that helps Castle take down the ring.

Another character breakdown also revealed that the Punisher Task Force may play a role in the season. The production is looking to cast a detective in his early 30s named Melvin Skelling, who may Detective Martin Soap, a character introduced in Ennis’ “Welcome Back, Frank” story arc. Soap, a tragically comedic character, appeared in a number of issues over the course of Ennis’ run.

At this point, all of this is purely speculation, but the breakdowns do seem to match the characters from the comics. “The Slavers,” written by Ennis with art by Leandro Fernandez, is a particularly dark arc, and would fit with the tone that was established in the series’ first season.
