The studio recently tapped up David Goyer as director and co-writer for the project, which it has been trying to get off the ground since 2009. Jon M. Chu (G.I. Joe: Retaliation) circled the movie in 2012, with McG then coming aboard only to step aside earlier this year.

Goyer — who has written on Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy and Man of Steel and directed the likes of Blade: Trinity and The Unborn — will be joined by screenwriter Lindsey Beer. Beer’s credits include Godzilla vs Kong, Barbie and she is also attached to the Star Trek writer’s room for Quentin Tarantino’s project.

Masters of the Universe is based on the popular Mattel action figure line, with Adam of Eternia front and center as He-Man. The property spawned a couple of animated series and a 1987 live-action film, which starred Dolph Lundgren as He-Man. He traveled from his home of Eternia to Earth in order to stop his nemesis Skeletor from using the Cosmic Key for evil means. The original cartoon ran from 1983 to 1985, with a follow-up in 1990 and a reboot in 2002.

Casting details have yet to be revealed for Masters of the Universe, which is slated to arrive in theaters on Dec. 18, 2019.
