Jumanji Beats Star Wars: Last Jedi At Box Office

Sony Pictures’ Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle amassed a whopping $36 million domestically this weekend, more than both Universal/Blumhouse’s fourth Insidious film ($29.3 million) and Disney/Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi ($23.6 million). Star Wars was the box office champ for the last three weeks, but was decisively beaten out by the Jumanji reboot, which was proven to have substantial lasting power. On an approximated production budget of $90 million, the film has grossed over $244 million domestically and $275 million from overseas markets for an impressive $519 million worldwide total. The film opened in U.S. theaters on December 20, 2017.

Regardless, Disney/Lucasfilm shouldn’t be disappointed by The Last Jedi. Crowned the highest-grossing film of 2017, the film has garnered widespread praise from critics, surely helping the ninth Star Wars entry bring its domestic and international totals to $572.5 million and $632.7 million, respectively. The film’s worldwide gross currently sits above $1.2 billion.
