Donald Glover: Solo Director Switch Didn’t Change Much

Donald Glover assures fans that the upcoming Solo: A Star Wars Story anthology movie won’t be all that different, despite switching directors during production.

Glover, the actor who’ll portray a younger Lando Calrissian, was on a panel at the Television Critics’ Association press tour on Friday and, of course, the Star Wars spin-off movie he’s set to appear in was a topic of conversation. When asked how the change in production affected the movie, Glover answered with, “It didn’t really.”

“I think we were never faced with anything like that and he did a good job of coming in and didn’t want us to change what we were doing at all,” the actor explained. “He wanted us to be comfortable with our vision.” Glover was also questioned about the amount of reshoots he personally participated in, and explained that “not a ton” took place.

Lord and Miller, the directors who were originally responsible for Solo, were brought on thanks to their comedic, improvisational directing style — but ultimately this style didn’t line-up with how Disney and Lucasfilm wanted to produce the film. These creative differences led to director Ron Howard being brought in, which spurred a recent report that stated he reshot more than was initially intended. This understandably led some fans to believe the movie could be in trouble, especially after Justice League’s director situation and eventual poor box office performance.
