The Last Jedi’s Monday Box Office

Sony’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle managed to overtake Star Wars: The Last Jedi at the New Year’s Day box office, knocking the film out of first place for the first time since its release.

After losing the New Year’s weekend to Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Sony’s surprise holiday hit Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle managed to overtake the latest Lucasfilm release with $16.2 million in North America on Monday. According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Last Jedi fell to second place with $14.5 million. Despite the fact that The Last Jedi is trailing 28% behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens‘ $742 million at this point two years ago, the film has managed to surpass $1 billion at the worldwide box office with $531.9 million stateside alone.

Still, the biggest surprise has proven to be Sony’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. The film has continued to outperform estimates since its release in December and is already approaching $350 million at the worldwide box office. Currently, the film has amassed $185.6 million stateside around three weeks in and looks all but set to hit $200 million at the domestic box office by the end of the month. Even more impressive is the fact that the Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson-led film looks set to overtake Justice League‘s domestic haul relatively soon. That film is currently sitting at $225.9 million stateside and has already lost a majority of its theaters after falling out of the top ten awhile back.

In theaters now, director Jake Kasdan’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle stars Dwayne Johnson as Dr. Smolder Bravestone, Kevin Hart as Moose Finbarr, Jack Black as Professor Shelly Oberon, Karen Gillan as Ruby Roadhouse, and Nick Jonas as Alex.
