Last Jedi Is Now (Unsurprisingly) the Top Film of 2017

Just after crossing the $1 billion mark at the global box office, Star Wars: The Last Jedi is now the top-grossing movie of 2017.

Rian Johnson’s highly-polarizing film officially overtook Disney’s Beauty and the Beast thanks to its tally of $517 million at the US box office. This figure also helped it on its way to becoming the fourth film franchise to go past the billion-dollar mark. The latest installment from George Lucas’ universe took in $99 million over the four-day Christmas window, and is now perched to finish in the top-five highest grossing movies ever.

However, despite its accolades, The Last Jedi is still projected to fall short of the record-breaking Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which sits at #3 all-time with $2.06 billion. Coupled with The Force Awakens, Disney has now tallied the $4 billion that was actually spent to purchase Lucasfilm. It’s also worth noting that Johnson’s numbers helped the franchise as a whole tally $8.7 billion in terms of worldwide gross over the course of its history.

Going into its fourth weekend, The Last Jedi sits as the third highest-grossing Star Wars movie of all time, behind The Force Awakens and last year’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which ended its run with a haul of $1.06 billion.

Written and directed by Rian Johnson, Star Wars: The Last Jedi stars Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Daisy Ridley as Rey, John Boyega as Finn, Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron, Andy Serkis as Supreme Leader Snoke, Domhnall Gleeson as General Hux, Gwendoline Christie as Captain Phasma.
