Ridley Scott ‘Too Dangerous’ for a Star Wars Film

All the Money in the World director Ridley Scott doesn’t have any plans to take on the Star Wars universe. The filmmaker, who created his own space-based franchise with 1979’s Alien, considers himself “too dangerous” a director for the task.

Asked if he had ever been offered a Star Wars film, Scott told Vulture, “No, no. I’m too dangerous for that.”

“Because I know what I’m doing,” he continued with a laugh. “I think they like to be in control, and I like to be in control myself. When you get a guy who’s done a low-budget movie and you suddenly give him $180 million, it makes no sense whatsoever. It’s fuckin’ stupid. You know what the reshoots cost?”

“Millions! Millions. You can get me for my fee, which is heavy, but I’ll be under budget and on time. This is where experience does matter, it’s as simple as that! It can make you dull as dishwater, but if you’re really experienced and you know what you’re doing, it’s fucking essential. Grow into it, little by little. Start low-budget, get a little bit bigger, maybe after $20 million, you can go to $80. But don’t suddenly go to $160,” he said.

Since the Star Wars universe returned with The Force Awakens, the franchise has been directed by J.J. Abrams, Godzilla‘s Gareth Edwards (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) and Looper helmer Rian Johnson (The Last Jedi). In June, directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller were infamously removed from Solo: A Star Wars Story, only for Ron Howard to join and film extensive reshoots. Later on, in September, Colin Trevorrow exited the as-yet-untitled Star Wars: Episode IX and Abrams returned as director.

Ridley Scott’s All the Money in the World starring Christopher Plummer is now in theaters.

Written and directed by Rian Johnson, Star Wars: The Last Jedi stars Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Daisy Ridley as Rey, John Boyega as Finn, Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron, Andy Serkis as Supreme Leader Snoke, Domhnall Gleeson as General Hux, Gwendoline Christie as Captain Phasma, Anthony Daniels as C-3PO, Lupita Nyong’o as Maz Kanata, Benicio Del Toro as ‘DJ’, Kelly Marie Tran as Rose Tico, Laura Dern as Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo, and the late Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa. The film is in theaters worldwide.
