Possible Logo For Sony’s Venom Movie Surfaces

With production on Sony Pictures’ Venom in full swing, we now have our first look at what appears to be the official logo for the Spider-Man spinoff.

While attending Comic Con Experience in Brazil, Steve Weintraub of Collider caught a glimpse of a banner at the Sony booth depicting a comic-book-accurate version of the longtime Spider-Man foe emerging from the center of a scarlet-red “V.” The banner was also emblazoned with the apparent tagline for the film: “WE ARE #venom.”

Little is known about the long-planned Spider-Man spinoff, although recent rumors suggest the film by director Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, Gangster Squad) will adapt the 1993 Marvel Comics miniseries Venom: Lethal Protector, in which symbiote host Eddie Brock turns from a villain to an antihero and moves to San Francisco. Hunted by the father of one of his victims, he’s soon targeted by super-powered mercenaries who are offshoots of the Venom symbiote: Scream, Riot, Phage, Agony and Lasher. There are rumors that Michelle Williams will play She-Venom, and Riz Ahmed will become Carnage, so there’s a chance the movie will adapt the storyline with a new group of villains.

However, these rumors may have been debunked by a recent set photo showing Hardy seemingly decked out in military gear — a drastic departure from the character’s traditional backstory. In Marvel Comics lore, Eddie Brock was a journalist and rival of Peter Parker before coming into contact with the Venom symbiote, so the inclusion of a military history may indicate that this version of Brock will share some similarities with the Flash Thompson/Agent Venom iteration of the character.

While the exact direction of Venom‘s plot remains remains shrouded in mystery, one thing that’s certain is fans shouldn’t expect Peter Parker to team up with Brock, as Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has stated the Sony-produced spinoff will exist outside of Marvel Cinematic Universe continuity: “I think they’re focusing on making a great Venommovie, and I don’t know much about it, but I know they’re off to a good start with Tom Hardy.”

Directed by Ruben Fleischer from a script by Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg, Venom stars Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock/Venom. Jenny Slate, Michelle Williams and Riz Ahmed will also star in the film, though their current roles are unknown. The film is targeted for release on Oct. 5, 2018.
