Quentin Tarantino’s Star Trek movie pitch is heading to the writers’ room over at Paramount, as the Hateful Eight director’s pitch, reportedly delivered to JJ Abrams, seemingly went well. According to a report from Deadline, Tarantino’s pitch will be fast-tracked to a writers’ room. There, a team of writers will work to flesh out the story, the details of which have yet to be revealed.
Tarantino’s next film, about the Manson family murders back in the ‘60s, is currently being prepped at Sony Pictures, but if the Star Trek pitch goes well, Tarantino might be asked to direct the film, with Abrams set to produce. While Tarantino is known for penning and directing his own movies, he has also directed for established franchises like CSI and ER.

So, where did Tarantino’s potential Star Trek gig come from? Back in September, the director was a guest on the Nerdist podcast, where he discussed his love for certain Star Trek episodes, like Harlan Ellison’s “City on the Edge of Forever,” which saw the crew of the Enterprise flung back in time after a medical accident sends Doctor Leonard McCoy fleeing from the ship.
The crux of Tarantino’s argument was that the best Star Trek episode scripts could easily be expanded into a 90-minute movie. Perhaps the director’s claim took on a life of its own and in a few years we’ll be seeing Kirk, Spock and the rest of the gang traipsing through 1930s New York City.
