DC Entertainment President and Chief Creative Officer — and comics scribe in his own right — Geoff Johns has indicated there could be new Shazam! comics on the way. At least, he’s let it publicly know he really wants some new Shazam! comics.

Replying to his collaborator Gary Frank on Twitter — with whom he incepted the New 52 incarnation of the DC Comics hero — Johns made a plea for more Shazam! comic books. He was responding to Frank’s remark in which the artist said his favorite comics work he’d done was his Shazam! run — until his latest effort, the hotly anticipated event series, Doomsday Clock.
Johns responded with the following:
Must do more Shazam! https://t.co/Hk1wI8Anqe

Perhaps unrelated, artist of the last Shazam! comic series (which tied into DC’s Convergence event), Evan “Doc” Shaner, recently posted some Shazam! sketches he’d done to Twitter. Shaner drew the top two Shazam! antagonists: Black Adam and Doctor Sivana.
Coincidence?

RELATED: Shazam: Zachary Levi to Play Title Character in DC Film
Originally called Captain Marvel, the character’s name was formerly changed to Shazam! (the word he utters to transform into his adult superhero form) for his New 52 origin. The character was Fawcett Comics’ most successful character — and the industry’s bestselling hero — throughout the 1940s and 1950s, and was eventually acquired by DC Comics. Since, the character has appeared in various volumes of his own title, in addition to the Justice League series. He’s also set to get his own solo film, due in theaters in 2019.
Set to shoot from February until May in Toronto, Ontario, the upcoming DCEU Shazam! film was thought to star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as longtime Shazam! foe Black Adam, until it was revealed the character would instead feature in his own solo film. It now seems Sivana will take place of Black Adam as the film’s central villain.

The next DC film to go into production, Shazam! stars Zachary Levi as the title character, in addition to Asher Angel as the young Billy Batson, Mark Strong as Doctor Sivana and Annabelle: Creation’s Grace Fulton. Directed by David F. Sandberg, Shazam! hits theaters in April, 2019.
