Like the Scarlet Speedster himself, The Flash creators are looking into Barry Allen’s future. On Twitter, guest director Kevin Smith revealed that executive producer Andrew Kreisberg has filled him in on the story for Season 5.
Just ate at @Jerrys_Deli with @andrewkreisberg. He told me the story of NEXT season’s @CW_TheFlash. I now have to stay alive one more year. pic.twitter.com/F4bxJ707fM

Since Kreisberg has discussed Season 5 plans with Smith, it seems likely that the show will invite him back to direct another episode of The Flash in the future. Smith certainly has plans to; according to his Tweet, “I now have to stay alive one more year” in order to make his Flash comeback. The Clerks director has already filmed five episodes across two Arrowverse shows: two episodes of Flash and three episodes of Supergirl, one of which debuts next Monday, November 6. He has also expressed interest in working on an episode of Arrow.
Of course, it shouldn’t come as a huge surprise that The Flash is developing plans for next season. After all, Season 3 dropped hints aplenty for its Season 4 protagonist, the Thinker; both Abra Kadabra and Savitar namedropped DeVoe before he showed up in the Season 4 premiere. Since Season 5 is already in the works, the show may be able to pull the same stunt and start laying the groundwork in Season 4.
Starring Grant Gustin as the Scarlet Speedster, The Flash airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW. The series also stars Jesse L. Martin, Tom Cavanagh, Carlos Valdes, Candice Patton, Danielle Panabaker, Keiynan Lonsdale and more.
