The Last Jedi Set to Have 2nd-Highest Opening Ever


Early box office projections are estimating a whopping $215 million opening for Star Wars: The Last Jedi when it releases stateside the weekend of December 15, 2017.

The figures are coming from BoxOffice.com, which indicates the Force Awakens sequel could unseat Jurassic World as the second-highest opener of all-time, domestically. According to box office insider Shawn Robbins, the film’s expected success can be attributed to an ever-growing fanbase, spurred by Disney’s groundbreaking marketing campaign.

The top spot goes to The Force Awakens, which earned a gigantic $247.9 million its opening weekend in the United States and Canada, for an eventual domestic total of $936.6 million.

However, these estimates should be taken with a grain of salt, as the film is a little less than two months from release.

Opening December 15, Star Wars: The Last Jedi features returning cast members Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa, Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, Daisy Ridley as Rey, John Boyega as Finn, Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron, Lupita Nyong’o as Maz Kanata, Domhnall Gleeson as General Hux, Anthony Daniels as C-3PO, Gwendoline Christie as Captain Phasma and Andy Serkis as Supreme Leader Snoke, joined by franchise newcomers Kelly Marie Tran as Rose, Benicio del Toro as “DJ” and Laura Dern as Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo.
