X-Files S11 Brings The Hunt For William & Skinner’s Backstory

It sounds like fans are finally going to get some kind of closure regarding Mulder and Scully’s son William — well, as much closure as anything ever gets on the X-Files. At New York Comic Con, Chris Carter confirmed that William will figure prominently into the plot of Season 11, and the trailer, which was released at the X-Files‘ NYCC panel, doubled down on his assertion.

In the trailer, amidst frantically running from CSM and his minions as they plan the destruction of the human race, Scully desperately searches for her son. At the end, she begs Mulder from a hospital bed to “find him and stop him from releasing Hell on Earth.” Just what William is or is capable of is unclear, but Mulder and Scully aren’t the only ones looking for him. It appears much of the season’s action will be centered around their now 15-year-old progeny.

On a lighter note, fans of Mulder and Scully’s biggest champion are in for a serious treat — Mitch Pileggi’s steadfast Agent Skinner will finally get an episode that’ll give him a genuine backstory, or, at least, more of one than we’ve had in the past. Up until this point, the only things we really knew about Special Agent Skinner were that he had a wife named Karen, he suffers from recurring dreams of an old woman, and as a Marine, he had a traumatic tour of duty in Vietnam. Despite his prominence in the over-arching X-Files mythology, and the character’s unflagging popularity, his background has remained as enigmatic and mysterious as the X-Files themselves.

We don’t have any details on what exactly we’ll find out about Skinner when the franchise returns once more, but we do know the episode dedicated to him will feature the agent as a young man. It’s reasonable to guess that we’ll get a peek at some pivotal moment or period in Skinner’s life. That, plus his increased screen time this season (promised by Mitch Pileggi during the show’s panel), should please fans who found themselves disappointed with his lack of a presence in Season 10.

After ending a seminal nine-season run in 2002, The X-Files returned with new episodes in 2016, a resurrection that saw the return of most of the franchise’s main characters, including Doggett’s partner Monica Reyes (Annabeth Gish).

The 10-episode 11th season of The X-Files will reunite creator Chris Carter with stars David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson and Mitch Pileggi, plus William B. Davis, Annabeth Gish, Lauren Ambrose and Robbie Amell in 2018.
