Gotham Season 4 Highlight Reel

A new highlight reel for the fourth season of Gotham was released today at New York Comic Con. The video is largely a recap of the three episodes that have aired in the show’s current season, drawing on each episode’s most pivotal moments. The video’s end teases the introduction of a new villain in the next episode.

The video starts by recalling one of the critical plot points of the current season: the licenses doled out to criminals by the Penguin. Anyone who holds a license in Gotham City can commit crimes without fear of repercussions, so long as they fork over half their earnings to Penguin. What should result in a mutiny among police is considered another aspect of doing business in a corrupt city.

The highlight reel also recalled James Gordon’s tussle with Scarecrow during the Arkham Asylum riots. Scarecrow sprayed Gordon with his fear toxin, hoping to get revenge on the officer for past slights. Gordon overcame the toxin’s effects, though, and fought back against Scarecrow before realizing the toxin could be dissolved with water. Gordon triggered the asylum’s sprinkler system, cancelling out the toxin’s effects on himself and the inmates.

The video ends with a tease for the next episode, “The Demon’s Head.” Barbara Kean and Ra’s al Ghul are considering an ancient dagger that is currently in Bruce Wayne’s possession. A new villain, Anubis, is then revealed. A sharp-toothed, pale man, Anubis bears little resemblance to the Anubis of comics fame – an actual Egyptian god with the head of a jackal.

The show’s Anubis character might be closer in origin to Kai the Hellhound, a fanatical martial arts student who sparks a rivalry with a young Selina Kyle. Mad Dog, an assassin briefly aligned with Ra’s al Ghul’s League of Assassins, is another possibility. Regardless, Gotham’s Anubis only hisses, so his comics origin is up in the air.
