Harrison Ford Doesn’t Want to Return to Star Wars

After his character’s death in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Han Solo actor Harrison Ford has gone on record to say that he’d rather not return to the Star Wars franchise — although he hasn’t necessarily written off future appearances, should the studio find a way to bring him back.

Speaking to GQ, Ford briefly addressed his future with the Star Wars universe and whether he’d be open to a potential return. While the actor was excited to return as the famous smuggler for The Force Awakens, where he saw his character die at the hands of his on-screen son Kylo Ren, Ford seems all but ready to leave the beloved franchise behind. That doesn’t mean he has entirely written off the possibility of returning for future appearances, though. As he explained to the publication, “I mean, I’m finished with Star Wars if Star Wars is finished with me.”

Still, when it comes down to it, he would “rather not” return if it were up to him, as he would rather focus on something new: “I can’t imagine [returning]. But it is science fiction. I’d rather not. You know, at this point I’d rather do something else. Just because it’s more interesting to do something new.”

While there are currently no plans for Ford to return to Star Wars, his character will be getting his own solo film in 2018 with Alden Ehrenreich taking over as the beloved smuggler. Based on a script by Lawrence and Jon Kasdan, the Han Solo spinoff stars Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian and Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca, in addition to Emilia Clarke, Thandie Newton, Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Woody Harrelson. The as-yet-untitled film is scheduled to hit theaters on May 25, 2018.
