The actor who plays Black Manta in Warner Bros.’ Aquaman dredged up a painful memory from the hero’s past, and Ocean Master was happy to lend him a hand.

Actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen wished his Twitter followers “Happy Thursday” with the cover art from DC Comics’ Brightest Day #20, which depicts Black Manta standing triumphant after severing Aquaman’s hand — which, granted, isn’t the first time that’s happened to the Sea King. As far as “Throwback Thursdays” go, that’s pretty brutal.

Adding insult to i9njury, Ocean Master actor Patrick Wilson chimed in with support, writing, “Yes. Bad guys rule.” Needless to say, none of that escaped the attention of Aquaman director James Wan, who cautioned, “Whoa. Spoiler, dude.”

In all likelihood it’s not a spoiler for Aquaman, that is, unless Wan, Wilson and Abdul-Mateen are just really, really bad at keeping secrets. But considering how much star Jason Momoa resembles Aquaman as he appeared in the 1990s, when he lost a hand (the first time) to hungry piranha, many fans have wondered whether the hero’s iconic harpoon prosthetic might make an appearance in the film, or its probable sequel.

Momoa, who debuted as Aquaman in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, will reprise his role in November is Justice League, ahead of the release of his solo film next year.

Arriving Dec. 21, 2018, Aquaman stars Jason Momoa as Aquaman/Arthur Curry, Willem Dafoe as Nuidis Vulko, Amber Heard as Mera, Patrick Wilson as Ocean Master, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Temuera Morrison as Thomas Curry, Dolph Lundgren as Nereus, Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, Ludi Lin as Murk, and Michael Beach as Jesse Kane.
