Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn is set to take to the small screen for his next project, as it was revealed today that he has signed on to pen the pilot script (and potentially direct) for a Starsky and Hutch television series reboot hailing from Sony Pictures Television Studios.

Gunn will pen the reboot and may step behind the camera to direct, depending on his availability. The project appears to be in the early stages, as Sony is still shopping the show around and there are rumored to be multiple bidders among broadcast, cable and streaming services. As of right now, Gunn has only turned in a pitch. A full script will come later.
The director, who is also hard at work on Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3, will pen the script alongside his brother, Brian Gunn, and cousin, Mark Gunn, with all three expected to serve as executive producers on the series. While details are still sparse for the time being, the reboot is described as being a character-driven, hourlong procedural.

Sony Pictures Television owns the broadcast rights to the title, as they were the home of the original series. As for the film rights, those belong to Warner Bros., which released a feature film reboot starring Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson back in 2004. The original series starred David Soul and Paul Michael Glaser and ran for four seasons.
