L Confronts Light in New Death Note Movie Scene

While much has changed in Death Note‘s journey from smash-hit manga and anime to live-action Netflix film — most notably the setting, and the ethnicities of the characters — at least one thing remains the same: the quirky posture of the enigmatic detective L.

In this new clip from director Adam Wingard’s adaptation, L (Keith Stanfield) strikes a familiar pose as he surprises Light Turner (Nat Wolff) at a cafe, ratcheting up the tension in their dangerous game of cat and mouse.

Based on the hit manga by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata, the Netflix film moves the setting from Japan to Seattle, Washington, where brilliant high school student Light discovers the mysterious notebook and decides to change the world by using its power to kill criminals. However, his crusade puts him in the cross hairs of the mysterious detective known only as L, who seeks to track down Light and end his reign of terror.

Light Turner, a bright student, stumbles across a mystical notebook that has the power to kill any person whose name he writes in it. Light decides to launch a secret crusade to rid the streets of criminals. Soon, the student-turned-vigilante finds himself pursued by a famous detective known only by the alias L.

Arriving Aug. 25 on Netflix, Death Note stars Nat Wolff as Light Turner, Margaret Qualley as Mia Sutton, Keith Stanfield as L, Paul Nakauchi as Watari, Shea Whigham as James Turner and Willem Dafoe as Ryuk.
