Kurt Russell Called Star-Lord ‘Star Wars’

Early copies of the Blu-ray release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 have revealed that Kurt Russell couldn’t quite get the name of Chris Pratt’s character down. Apparently, the actor continuously referred to him as “Star Wars,” rather than his actual name — Star-Lord. One such example includes a pivotal moment made slightly more humorous by the mistake:

“Well, even where I reside out past the edge of what’s known, we’ve heard tales about the man they call Star Wars. We could be in trouble…”

The phenomenon has been captured on the Blu-ray’s deleted scenes, but the film’s physical release comes later this month. In the meantime, the Guardians director James Gunn stepped in via Twitter to confirm that Russell’s naming tic popped up not once, but multiple times.

By now, it’s well-known that Russell tried out for the part of Han Solo in the original Star Wars. That part eventually went to Harrison Ford, but Guardians does share some similarities with the franchise. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 specifically mirrors the events of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, what with Russell playing a sinister father who attempts to recruit his hero son into what equates to the Dark Side. Anyone could admit confusion, given the circumstances. Luckily, Russell knows how to play off his mistakes as a joke, and did so numerous times:

“We’ve heard tell of the man they call Star Wars. Ugh. Yes, Star Wars. He’s all of Star Wars. We’ve heard of the movie Star Wars.”

The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Blu-ray releases on August 22, while the digital version is currently available for purchase on various streaming storefronts.
