Sony’s The Dark Tower has won the box office this weekend with a lackluster $19.5 million.

Despite terrible reviews, the Idris Elba-starrer managed to come out on top of the box office this weekend with a mediocre $19.5 million stateside. The film, which was made for approximately $66 million, has had a weird/complicated journey to the big screen, and in the end, failed to impress critics securing a poor 18% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The $19.5 million opening for The Dark Tower is a far cry from last year’s Suicide Squad, which opened to a massive $133 million — a steep -46% drop from the prior year. The film also managed to secure the title if the second lowest opening this year, only behind Split. Thankfully for Sony, with a $66 million production budget, the film could still go on to earn its budget back with the help of foreign box office numbers.
As of right now, while The Dark Tower appears to be a failure at the box office stateside, it appears the television series — meant to be a prequel — is still moving forward with Elba expected to return in the role as the Gunslinger.
