Infinity War Will Not Star Captain Marvel

Avengers: Infinity War will feature a multitude of heroes, but Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel will not be among them. At Comic-Con International in San Diego, director Joe Russo revealed to ComicBook.com that Carol Danvers will not make her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in the third Avengers film.

“She’s not in Avengers 3,” Russo said.

Captain Marvel has been rumored to appear in Avengers: Infinity War for some time now, but Russo’s most recent statement definitively shuts that down. Instead, Carol will most likely debut in her solo film Captain Marvel, which is scheduled to hit theaters on March 8, 2019. She could still appear in the as-yet-untitled fourth Avengers film, which is due out May 3, 2019, though that has not yet been confirmed.

During Marvel Studios’ Hall H at SDCC, president Kevin Feige revealed that Captain Marvel will be set in the early 1990s and will feature an appearance by Nick Fury, who will still have both his eyes when the story kicks off. The villains of the film will be the Skrulls in their first MCU appearance. Aside from that, there isn’t much currently known about the plot of Captain Marvel.

More is known about Avengers: Infinity War, which hits theaters next year. Infinity War footage screened at D23 Expo and Comic-Con demonstrated Thanos’ might as he confronted members of both the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy in his quest to complete his Infinity Gauntlet and attain infinite power. The final shot in the put that power on display as Thanos used the Gauntlet to pull down an entire planet on the opposing heroes.

As it stands, five of the six Infinity Stones will have to be retrieved — the “Tesseract” or Space Stone is on Asgard; the Mind Stone is in Vision’s forehead on Earth; the Reality Stone, or “Aether,” is with the Collector; the Power Stone, or the “Orb,” is with the Nova Corps on Xandar; and the Time Stone is in the Eye of Agamotto on Earth — with the location of the sixth, the Soul Stone, still unknown. The Children of Thanos (or the Black Order in the comics) have also been confirmed for the movie.

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Infinity War boasts a sprawling ensemble cast that includes Robert Downey Jr., Josh Brolin, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Olsen, Sebastian Stan, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Bettany, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Benedict Wong, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista, Pom Klementieff, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Holland and Anthony Mackie. The film arrives in theaters May 4, 2018, with the untitled sequel opening May 3, 2019.
