A new trailer for ABC’s upcoming Inhumans television show was released today during Comic-Con International in San Diego. The trailer acts as a rallying cry for Inhumans loyal to their king, Black Bolt, and dissenters alike, setting up the civil war-like conflict that will likely define the show’s core, but it also comes with stinger that will no doubt leave Inhumans fans intrigued.
The curious bit of dialogue comes right at the end of the trailer, when Maximus (Iwan Rheon) is seated on the throne of Attilan. Medusa (Serinda Swan) can be heard to whisper in response to Maximus’ request that she acknowledge him as their new king: “Never. You’re just a human.”

The statement marks a major sea change for the character who, in the comics, is fully Inhuman and gifted with mental powers. The change has been known about for some time, though fans of the Inhumans comics would be forgiven if they hadn’t heard about it up to this point. While Marvel hasn’t hidden the fact that Maximus is not seen as an Inhuman by his peers, the news has only trickled out over time.
Maximus in ABC’s Inhumans differs from his comic book counterpart in that his exposure to Terrigenesis, a process every Inhuman goes through to unlock their latent mutant powers, actually stripped the king’s brother of his Inhuman genes. He is, by all accounts, human, and is treated as such by his peers — which is to say not well. This is a big departure for the character, and one ABC and Marvel Studios will likely use to their advantage when Inhumans releases later this year.
