Based on the Nebula Award-nominated novel written by Nnedi Okorafor in 2010, the story takes place in a fictionalized post-apocalyptic future version of Sudan, where the light-skinned Nuru oppress the dark-skinned Okeke, looking to wipe them off the map for good. The protagonist, Onyesonwu (Igbo for “who fears death”), is an Ewu, the title given to the child of an Okeke woman that has been raped by a Nuru man. Using her magical powers, an older Onyesonwu goes on a quest to defeat her sorcerer father Daib.

The project is just the latest addition to an ever-growing list Martin is working on for the channel. Martin’s fantasy novel series gave the network its biggest hit ever in Game of Thrones, which was adapted for the screen by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. Game of Thrones enters its penultimate season this weekend, but Martin is presently helping HBO continue the lifespan of the property through several proposed spin-offs.
